Tranassexuals? Transvestites? Crossdressers?

A transsexual is someone who was born a member of one sex but who feels that they should have been born with reproductive organs of the opposite sex. Now there are two types of transsexual people; the female-to-male (FTM) and the male-to-female (MTF) wherein the first gender applies to the sex they are born as and the second is what they wish to be.

In actual transsexual people are neither not freaks nor are they perverted and deserve as much respect as anyone else. Nobody realizes that theirs is a medical condition not brought on by them but something that they have inherited at birth. There is scientific proof that shows that transsexualism happens when they are a fetus in the womb.

There are many transsexuals who use medical, legal, social or surgical help to be accepted in society and more than anything, to find comfort and peace of mind within their own bodies. The social measures they take could be changing their attire, hair, manner of speech, using padded bras (MTF) or binding their breasts (FTM); while legal measures would include change of names and sex for the sake of identification.

As for medical measures the MTF take hormone therapy by using pills to increase estrogen, progesterone etc, while the FTM take a course usually of injections that increase their testosterone levels in order to make their bodies more masculine. The surgical steps could include steps like getting rid of the uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries in the case of females and the removal of the testes, gonads for the males.

Those people who dress in the attire of the opposite are who are called Transvestites. Ronald Toe-Tums was the man who coined this word which is derived from the Latin ‘Trans’ meaning cross over and ‘vestitus’ meaning dressed. So a person who dresses and behaves in the manner that is generally linked to that of the opposite sex is called a transvestite. This word was coined in the early 20th century and has undergone many changes.

The act of wearing clothes not belonging to their gender is what is commonly known as cross dressing. In general cross dressers do not exhibit fetish intentions but are men/women who wear the others clothing and admire and emulate the opposite sex. Such people cannot be typed in the same class as transvestites as they do not have any fetish intentions but do so more as a hobby.

Transsexual people are not transvestites or ‘trannies’ as they are generally called, nor can they be confused with cross dressers. Transsexuals have had this dysphoria since birth and it only becomes stronger as they grow. For them the emotion of being ensnared in the wrong body is a very serious matter resulting in at least 50% of them attempting suicide and many of them dying before they reach 30. The transvestites as a group alienate themselves from both homosexuals and transsexuals and as mentioned before do not involve themselves in fetish activities.
